Environmental protection in cosmetic packaging design

With the development of packaging design, the pressure of packaging design to the environment is also increasing. As long as it is a product, it will become a part of the industry. The environmental pollution can not be ignored, and their harm to the environment can not be concealed. With the development of environmental protection, cosmetics industry should pay more attention to environmental protection.

At last year’s Monaco luxury packaging exhibition, participants gave a full day speech on sustainable packaging. The sustainable packaging Alliance (SPC), located in Virginia, USA, is an industry group aiming to focus on the establishment of health and environmental protection concepts in the packaging industry. Its members include Estee Lauder, avatar, Clinique, Pinki Manifesto and other international first-line brands. SPC’s definition of sustainable packaging is: the raw materials of packaging have been reasonably developed, and their performance and price meet the market standards. The packaging must be produced with renewable energy and recycled after use.

In this year’s major brands of spring new products, we can find a large number of sustainable packaging applications. At present, more than 80% of baicaoji’s products adopt recyclable and degradable outer packaging, and all cartons are made of recycled paper; FANCL’s cartons and instructions are made of environmentally friendly recycled paper, and the containers are also natural resin materials that can be completely decomposed. Shiseido, DHC, Estee Lauder and other brands adopt light weight and low price replacement package to support environmental protection. Products and special boxes are sold separately, and consumers can replace them with new powder cores when they are used up.

Associate Professor Ke Xianwen, director of the packaging teaching and research section of the Department of printing and packaging of Wuhan University, said that sustainable packaging is mostly used for packaging medical, food, household appliances and other products, but less used in cosmetics. At present, most brands use degradable recycled paper, natural resin packaging, or weight replacement packaging, mostly from two aspects of material and structure. Sustainable packaging generally follows the “4r1d” principle: reduce packaging, recycle packaging, recover energy, refill large containers, and degrade packaging waste. “For example, degradable natural resin can be degraded and decomposed, and the content replacement packaging can be recycled. Different contents have different requirements for containers. Therefore, different methods should be selected for the products to be packaged. Since cosmetics are chemical products, they have higher requirements on chemical stability and physical properties of containers, and most of them are sustainable packaging It is difficult to achieve the physical and chemical properties of traditional containers by using natural materials that can be completely decomposed.

At present, the society pays more and more attention to environmental protection, and various environmental protection laws and regulations for packaging materials have been issued. Sustainable packaging was born in this background. However, the current environmental protection packaging design is more common in high-end goods and disposable goods, “cost is the key”, said Ke Xianwen. Traditional plastic and glass packaging materials have good mechanical properties and low price, and after decades of development, they are widely applicable. The current utilization rate of sustainable packaging is not high due to the high price of materials, immature production technology and performance defects.

With the development of economy, sustainable development will become the mainstream of packaging design, which is not only the requirement of the times, but also the social responsibility of every enterprise.
